It is with little surprise that alot of people lack the understanding of taxi services in Malaysia, even for the locals. In Johor Bahru, we are served by a multitude of of taxi categories which can be broadly categorized into Budget Taxi, Executive Taxi, Teksi 1Malaysia (TEKS1M) and Airport Taxi. Some requires booking in advance, due to its availability.
Getting around Johor Bahru by taxi can be a very convenient and affordable solution, if you are travelling in a group of less than 4 people and in a budget taxi that agrees to charge you a metered fare. Regrettably, it could turn out to be a bad experience for some as there are black sheeps among the taxi community that just refuses to switch on the meter and demands a flat fee to the destination. Remember – Price haggling is prohibited at all times.
With some tips and understanding of Johor Bahru taxi, I’m pretty sure you can get yourself a reasonable fare and a smooth ride around the town.
National car make with 1500cc & above. They are red in colour and consist of Malaysia’s own car make that include the likes of Proton Iswara, Proton Wira, Proton Waja or Proton Saga BLM. Luggage compartment could be very limited as the taxis are usually running on natural gas that requires the need for a gas tank. The in-car experience could be claustrophobic for passengers with a larger physique and the co-passengers. Despite the negatives, they are the cheapest to travel around town for short distances and do note their service area is limited to within Johor Bahru city area and its surrounding suburban towns.
Any car makes with 1950cc & above. Executive taxi are blue in colour and usually consists of Japanese car make models that usually includes Nissan Sylphy, Nissan Cephiro, Naza Ria, Nissan Serena and Toyota Innova. Boot space should be more than enough for most circumstances and passengers can ride in comfort especially with Naza Ria, Nissan Serena or Toyota Innova. The cons is their higher flag down rate, fare for every subsequent mileage and its availability. I reckon the executive taxi only takes up about 20% of the community, so one may have a harder time to hail one on the road. You will be better off making a call to book the taxi in advance.
Teksi 1Malaysia (TEKS1M)
Brown colour taxi made up of Toyota Innova and Proton Exora. Launched in March 2013 by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, the idea is to eventually migrate the current fleet of taxi when their license expire into a common class. The TEKS1M are usually in better conditions due to the fact the initiative was only kickstarted in 2013. Age of the cars should be no more than 3 years. They are slightly pricier than the budget taxi but cost less than an executive taxi, so its a great bargain for travelling in groups of no less than 6 persons. Hailing one on the road in random, could prove as challenging as getting the executive taxi. Remember to book in advance too !
Airport Taxi (Senai Airport)
Airport taxi are white in color, and can only pick up passengers from the airport but not anywhere else except for drop-offs. The airport taxis are located on the East Wing of Aeromall, and uses a coupon system that can be bought over the counter in the building. Airport taxi are only allowed to ferry passengers one way (from Senai airport to destination), and return empty for the trip back to airport. Expect to pay more than double the fare because the airport taxi operator will take a cut off the fees. Anyway, you can also expect to pay more than the usual fare when you get a budget or executive taxi to the airport since they are only allowed for drop-offs. Advanced booking is not required.
I have attached below the latest taxi fare rate for the various taxi categories, so that you can make the wisest & most inexpensive choice to travel around Johor Bahru.
